Malawi President Chakwera Concedes Defeat, Pledges Peaceful Transfer of Power
Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday conceded defeat in last week’s election, acknowledging that his rival, former president Peter Mutharika, had taken an “insurmountable lead.”
Chakwera, 70, a former pastor who came to power in 2020 after defeating Mutharika, made the announcement in a national broadcast. He expressed disappointment to his supporters but emphasized his commitment to a smooth and peaceful transition of power.
The election was largely dominated by economic concerns, as critics faulted Chakwera’s administration for mismanagement, corruption, and unfulfilled promises of job creation. Inflation soared to 33 percent during his tenure, with skyrocketing prices of maize and fertilizer — critical to Malawi’s agriculture-driven economy.
“In the days that remain, I want you to know that I am committed to a peaceful transfer of power,” Chakwera said.
