Aisha Yesufu Warns: “I’ll Oppose Peter Obi If He Exceeds One Term
Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has stirred fresh political conversation after declaring she would strongly oppose former Anambra State governor Peter Obi if he fails to honor his promise of serving only one term as president.Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Monday, April 6, Yesufu emphasized that integrity and accountability must remain central in leadership, especially when public promises are made.
According to her, Obi’s pledge to serve a single term is not a recent development but a position he held even before the 2023 general election. She revealed that she had personally engaged him in a conversation to confirm his stance.
“If Mr. Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I, Aisha Yesufu, said it here, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word,” she stated.
Yesufu recounted that after the 2023 elections, she sought direct clarification from Obi to ensure there was no ambiguity about his commitment.
“I sat down with him and asked, ‘Is it true you’re going to do just one term?’ He reaffirmed it and told me he meant it,” she said.
She further stressed that her reputation is tied to the promises she supports publicly, adding that she does not take such matters lightly.
“I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity when I say something,” she added.
While making it clear that she would resist any attempt to go beyond the agreed term, Yesufu also expressed confidence in Obi’s character, describing him as someone who keeps his word.
Her comments have sparked debate across Nigeria’s political space, with many citizens weighing in on the idea of a one-term presidency and the importance of leaders staying true to their promises.
As conversations around leadership, trust, and accountability continue, Yesufu’s strong stance serves as a reminder of the expectations Nigerians place on those seeking public office.
