Davido Shifts Focus to African Music and Culture After Global Success
After years of conquering the global stage, Nigerian superstar Davido is making a conscious and powerful return to his roots—both musically and culturally.
In a recent interview on BBC 1Xtra Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show, hosted by Eddie Kadi, Davido revealed that his upcoming sixth studio album will be deeply rooted in African sounds. According to the award-winning artist, this marks a deliberate shift away from Western musical influences that have shaped much of his global success.
Reflecting on his journey, Davido made it clear that he has achieved nearly everything the international music scene has to offer—from selling out arenas worldwide to attending multiple Grammy Awards in recent years. But now, his focus has changed.
He stated that this next phase of his career is about reconnecting with Africa, both in sound and audience. The music he is currently recording, he says, is “very, very African,” signaling a return to the core identity that first propelled him to stardom.
Interestingly, this shift is not entirely new. His fifth studio album, 5ive, released in 2025, already hinted at this direction. The project leaned heavily into Nigerian identity and resonated strongly across African markets, reaffirming the continent as a powerful base for Afrobeats.
Beyond the studio, Davido backed up his intent with action. His 5ive Tour took him across major Nigerian cities like Lagos, Ibadan, and Enugu—at a time when many top artists were focusing primarily on international tours. The move was widely praised as a commitment to homegrown fans and the local music scene.
Taken together, Davido’s recent moves paint a clear picture: after years of global dominance, he is intentionally refocusing on Africa. It’s not a step back, but rather a strategic and personal evolution—one that embraces the richness of African culture and the loyal audience that has supported him from the beginning.
As anticipation builds for his sixth album, one thing is certain—Davido is not just making music; he’s redefining his legacy.
