In a significant legal development in South Africa, the Bloemfontein Sexual Offences Court has handed down a 20-year prison sentence to 24-year-old Vuyisane Makeleni for the rape of a three-year-old child. According to a statement released by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) on March 18, 2026, the incident occurred on May 9, 2024, at a crèche where the accused was employed as a cook and general worker. Taking advantage of his position of trust, Makeleni accompanied the child to the restroom, where he committed the assault. He then threatened the young victim, instructing her not to disclose the incident.
Later that day, the child complained of pain at home, prompting concern from her mother. Upon questioning, the child revealed what had happened. A medical examination confirmed genital injuries, leading to swift police involvement and an investigation that ultimately resulted in the arrest and prosecution of the accused. Authorities also discovered that the crèche was unregistered, leading to its immediate closure.
During sentencing, the prosecution emphasized the gravity of the crime and the breach of trust involved. Advocate Ronel Botha argued that the accused posed a serious danger to society and that a strong custodial sentence was necessary—not only as punishment but also as a safeguard for other children. The court agreed, imposing a 20-year direct imprisonment sentence and ordering that the offender’s name be added to the Sexual Offenders Register.
